Contacts & audience
Add, import, and organize the people you email — contacts, custom fields, and groups.
Everything about your audience lives under Contacts, which has three tabs: Contacts, Groups, and Custom fields.
Adding contacts
One at a time — click Add contact, enter an email (required) and optionally a name and one or more groups, then save. Re-adding an existing address is safe; it won't create a duplicate.
Import a CSV — click Import contacts and:
- Upload the file.
- Map your columns to fields — Email is required; Name and group columns are optional.
- Review the preview and import.
Addresses that are already suppressed (previously bounced, complained, or unsubscribed) are skipped on import so they can't hurt your deliverability.
The contacts list
Each contact shows its email, name, groups, status, and when it was added. Status is one of:
- Subscribed — will receive campaigns.
- Unsubscribed — opted out; excluded from sends.
- Suppressed — bounced or complained; can't be emailed.
Use the search box (it also accepts a comma-separated list of emails) and the status and group filters to narrow the list. Select rows for bulk actions — delete, or add/remove from a group — and use Download CSV to export what's shown.
Contact detail
Click a contact to see its full record and an activity timeline that combines lifecycle events (created, added to a group, unsubscribed…) with email engagement (sent, opened, clicked, bounced). Use Edit to change the name, email, subscription, group membership, and any custom-field values.
Custom fields
Custom fields store extra attributes on a contact — company, plan, renewal date — and become personalization variables in your emails.
On the Custom fields tab, click Add custom field to define one (it gets a
stable token key). You can then set values per contact, and reference them in a
subject or body as {{your_field_key}}. See Personalization
for the full token list.
Groups
Groups let you target a subset of your contacts. On the Groups tab, click Create group and add members by picking contacts or pasting emails. Open a group to see its members and edit them, or rename and delete it.
When you build a campaign you choose its recipients as all contacts, one or more groups, specific contacts, or a mix — see Campaigns.
Suppressions
The Suppressions section lists addresses that won't be emailed and why (hard/soft bounce, complaint, or a manual entry). You can add an address manually, import a list, or remove one. Suppression is enforced everywhere — campaigns, single sends, and the API alike. More in Deliverability.
